Most smart glasses reviews focus on features: the camera, the speakers, the app. Fewer talk about what changes when you actually wear a pair through an Indian day, with bright sun, long commutes, heat and a phone that never stops ringing. This guide covers the practical things that are easy to miss before you buy, from what "AI glasses" really means to why your eye power matters more than any spec sheet.
What smart glasses and AI glasses actually are
The terms get mixed up a lot, so it helps to separate them.
Audio smart glasses
These look like regular spectacles or sunglasses but have small speakers in the temples (the arms), a microphone and a battery. They connect to your phone over Bluetooth, so you can take calls, play music and reach your phone's voice assistant (Siri or Google Assistant) from the frame. There is no camera and no assistant built into the glasses themselves. At AI Chashma, the Lite, Shade and Action series work this way.
Camera glasses with a built-in AI assistant
These add a camera for hands-free photos and video, and an assistant that runs on the glasses and their app. On our Cam Series (Cam Aura, Cam Royale and Cam Spire), that means voice wake-up, AI Q&A, AI translation and object recognition, where the assistant tells you what the camera is looking at. This is what most people mean when they say "AI glasses".
Knowing which type you need saves money. If you mainly want calls and music without earbuds, you do not need to pay for a camera.
They replace your earphones more than your phone
Smart glasses will not replace your phone. You still need it for messages, maps, payments and the app that manages the glasses. What they do replace, for many people, is a pair of earphones.
- Calls: you answer or reject a call by touching or tapping the frame. The microphone is close to your mouth, and the camera models add dual-mic noise reduction for busier places.
- Music and podcasts: play, pause and skip from the frame. Nothing sits inside your ear.
- Quick questions: on audio models you trigger your phone's assistant; on camera models you can ask the built-in assistant.
Because the speakers are open-ear, you still hear traffic, announcements and people around you. The trade-off is that sound can leak at high volume, so in a quiet metro coach or office you will want to keep it moderate. Our post on open-ear audio versus earbuds goes into this in more detail.
Indian sunlight makes the lens choice important
In much of India you are outdoors in strong light for a good part of the year, and many people already wear sunglasses on the commute. That makes the lens type one of the most important decisions, and it is often an afterthought.
- Photochromic lenses darken in sunlight and turn clear indoors. Shade Shift and Shade Urban come with them as standard, so one pair works at your desk and on the road. You can browse these in our photochromic smart glasses collection.
- Swipe-to-change tint is a different idea. Lite Breeze lets you change the lens tint yourself by swiping on the frame. It is not photochromic, because you control it rather than the sunlight.
- Sunglasses lenses on models such as Lite Neo and Action Velocity stay tinted. They suit people who mostly want smart glasses for outdoor use.
- Clear lenses suit indoor and evening use, and are the base option on prescription-ready frames.
If you wear spectacles, power lenses decide everything
This is the point most first-time buyers miss. If you need glasses to see clearly, you cannot wear smart glasses on top of your spectacles, and you will not want to take your spectacles off to use them. The only practical answer is smart glasses made with your own power.
AI Chashma offers single-vision prescription lenses on eight models: Lite Air, Lite Feather, Lite Flow, Lite Pilot, Lite Drift, Cam Aura, Cam Royale and Cam Spire. You enter your power for each eye, upload your prescription, and the lenses are made to order and delivered in about 7–14 working days. Bifocal and progressive lenses are not supported. You can see all eligible frames in our smart glasses with power lens collection, and our step-by-step guide to ordering smart glasses with your eye power explains how to read your prescription.
What the battery figures really mean
Battery claims are usually quoted as "playback", which means audio such as music and calls. Here is what our product pages list:
- Shade Shift, Shade Urban, Lite Air, Lite Feather, Lite Flow, Lite Breeze and Action Velocity: up to 5 hours of playback.
- Lite Neo: up to 6 hours.
- Lite Pilot and Lite Drift: up to 8 hours.
- Cam Aura and Cam Royale: up to 12 hours of playback; Cam Spire: 10–12 hours.
Recording video and using the AI assistant on camera models use more power than music, so if you shoot a lot you will charge sooner. Standby time is longer than playback, which matters if you wear the glasses all day but only use the audio now and then.
Camera glasses need a little etiquette
Camera glasses make some people uneasy, and that concern is reasonable. A camera at eye level is less obvious than a phone held up in front of someone. A few habits help:
- Tell people when you are recording, and ask before filming anyone in a private setting.
- Respect places that restrict photography, such as cinemas, exam halls, hospitals, offices and many places of worship.
- Never record or fiddle with the glasses while driving.
Used this way, the camera is simply a convenient way to capture your own day, and the built-in assistant and translation are useful even when the camera is not recording.

A short checklist before you buy
- Decide whether you need a camera and built-in AI, or only calls and music.
- Check if you need your eye power, and whether your model supports it.
- Pick a lens type for where you spend your day: clear, photochromic or tinted.
- Compare battery life against your longest regular day.
- Read the warranty and replacement terms. Ours are a 6-month warranty and a 7-day replacement for damaged or defective items.
