Photochromic smart glasses that adapt to light
Photochromic smart glasses combine lenses that darken in sunlight with Bluetooth calls and music in the frame. Shade Urban and the White Shade Shift come with photochromic lenses as standard (the Black Shade Shift has dark sunglass lenses), and eight more models offer a photochromic lens option. If you would rather set the tint yourself, Lite Breeze has a lens you darken or lighten with a swipe on the frame. Prices start at ₹1,990.
What are photochromic smart glasses?
Photochromic lenses contain molecules that react to ultraviolet light. When you step outdoors, UV from the sun makes the lenses tint, so they act like sunglasses. When you go back indoors, away from UV, they gradually return to clear. Photochromic smart glasses put these lenses into a frame that also has speakers, a microphone and a battery, so the same pair handles your calls, music and voice assistant. The effect is automatic, with no button to press, and it works every time you move between indoor and outdoor light.
What are the benefits of photochromic smart glasses?
The practical benefit is carrying one pair instead of two. You do not need to swap between clear glasses and sunglasses when you walk from the office to the parking lot or from a shop onto a sunny street. For people who are in and out all day, such as sales staff, delivery riders, students and travellers, this saves a lot of fumbling. Indian sunlight is strong for much of the year, so a lens that darkens on its own is useful. You still get the smart features: hands-free calls, music through open-ear speakers and access to Siri or Google Assistant. If you also need eye power, several models combine photochromic lenses with your prescription.
Which photochromic smart glasses should I buy?
Three models come with photochromic or colour-changing lenses as standard, and the rest let you choose it as an upgrade:
- Shade Shift: our most affordable model at ₹1,990, Type-C charging, 5 hours playback, up to 10 days standby
- Shade Urban: magnetic charging, 5 hours playback, ₹3,290
- Photochromic option: Lite Air, Lite Feather, Lite Flow, Lite Pilot, Lite Drift, Cam Aura, Cam Royale and Cam Spire
Can I add a photochromic lens to other smart glasses?
Yes. On eight models you choose the lens when you order. On the product page, select Photochromic instead of Clear or Blue Tick, and the price updates to include the upgrade. This option is available on Lite Air, Lite Feather, Lite Flow, Lite Pilot and Lite Drift, which are audio-only Bluetooth models, and on the camera models Cam Aura, Cam Royale and Cam Spire. On every model the photochromic lens adds ₹2,000. This route makes sense if you want a specific frame, a longer battery such as the 8 hours on Lite Pilot, or a camera and AI assistant along with lenses that darken outdoors.
Can I wear photochromic smart glasses indoors and at night?
Yes. Indoors and at night there is little or no UV light, so the lenses stay clear or return to clear within a few minutes of coming inside. That makes photochromic smart glasses suitable for all-day wear, including at your desk, in meetings and in the evening. Keep in mind that the lenses respond to UV rather than brightness alone. On a cloudy day there is still UV, so they will tint to some degree. Very bright indoor lighting will not darken them. In hot weather the lenses may not get quite as dark as in cool weather, and they tend to clear a little faster, which is normal behaviour for photochromic lenses.
Should I choose photochromic smart glasses or regular sunglasses?
Choose photochromic if you move between indoors and outdoors often and want one pair for everything. Choose fixed-tint sunglasses lenses if you spend long stretches outdoors in strong sun, such as cycling or a day at the beach, and want a constant dark tint. Our sports smart glasses use UV-protected sunglasses lenses for exactly that reason. Photochromic lenses also make sense if you need prescription power, because you avoid buying both power glasses and power sunglasses. If you mostly sit in front of screens and rarely go out, a Blue Tick lens may suit you better. You can compare every lens and frame across our full range of smart glasses. If you would rather have a fixed tint, browse smart sunglasses.
How do I care for photochromic smart glasses?
Clean the lenses with the wipes from the box or a microfibre cloth, and avoid harsh household cleaners, which can damage lens coatings. Do not leave the glasses on a car dashboard or in direct sun for long periods when you are not wearing them, since heat is hard on both lenses and the battery in the frame. Store them in the pouch to prevent scratches. Keep the frame dry and wipe it if it gets wet, because the electronics in the temples are not listed as water-resistant. Charge with the correct cable for your model: Shade Shift uses Type-C charging, while Shade Urban uses magnetic charging.
